What is yoga therapy and how does it work?

people standing near beach, some with umbrellas on a sunny day Yoga Therapy is an emerging, research-based model for alleviating physical and mental health conditions. It works in a number of ways, but primarily yoga therapy works by helping people build back muscular strength and flexibility, improve respiratory function and develop greater mindfulness. Through physical yoga practices, breathwork and meditation, changes can take place in the physical body, in the central nervous system, as well as in brain states allowing healing to occur. Yoga Therapy can work as a complement to other forms of therapies and healing approaches or as a stand-alone therapy.

What kinds of conditions can yoga therapists treat?

The conditions that can be improved through yoga therapy include chronic musculoskeletal pain, digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases, respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, osteoporosis, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, as well as other conditions. I offer a free 30-minute phone call or video consultation to see if my yoga therapy services can be beneficial for you.

Do I need to be experienced in yoga to use your services?

Not at all. I meet each of my clients where they are. No previous experience with yoga is necessary.

How long will it take for me to notice any improvement in my condition?

It depends on your condition. For some, a single therapeutic yoga “learning” session followed by your independent at-home practice may be sufficient. Others may benefit from additional personalized sessions that offer further refinement and/or reinforcement.

How often will we meet and what will I be responsible for doing between our meetings?

This also depends. If multiple sessions are needed, I may suggest that we meet every 2-3 weeks. In between sessions, I will be asking you to follow a customized take-home practice that I will prepare for you after our initial evaluation session. The take-home practice may include daily at-home practicing or it may include a 3, 4, or 5-times a week at-home practice. It really does depend on your condition and what will bring you the best possible outcome in the shortest amount of time.

Will we meet in person or online?

I offer both options. For physical conditions, I do like to have our initial meeting take place in person so that I can also complete a physical assessment; however, this is not absolutely necessary. The initial meeting and follow up sessions can easily be offered through a remote video conference if that is your preference.

Do you ever provide your services in your client’s home?

Yes, I do. However, I may add an additional travel cost, which I will establish with you prior to our meeting.

What do you charge for your services?

Please see my Services and Prices for information about my rates and my package options.
